DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – Musicians, professional athletes and golf enthusiasts will gather on Tuesday, May 20 for the Needtobreathe Classic presented by Commonwealth Cares Foundation. Registration is now open for the annual golf tournament benefiting Charleston area nonprofit Palmetto Medical Initiative.
Last year’s tournament raised more than $80,000 for PMI, which is building sustainable medical clinics around the world, including Uganda and Nicaragua. PMI recently announced plans to expand its efforts into Burundi. The proceeds from the 2013 Needtobreathe Classic were used to construct a medical clinic in El Viejo, Nicaragua, which was dedicated in January 2014. This year’s tournament proceeds will benefit another East African clinic in Uganda, with work slated to begin in January 2015.
Band members of Needtobreathe – Bear Rinehart, Bo Rinehart and Seth Bolt – are long-time supporters of PMI and, last year, decided to lend their name to Commonwealth Cares Foundation’s annual golf tournament.
“Investing in something bigger than oneself and one’s talents is something we all have a quiet desire for but rarely get to experience. My trip to Uganda with PMI in December 2011 was a small glimpse into the critical needs and important work that PMI is undertaking,” said Bear Rinehart of Needtobreathe. “PMI has done a brilliant job of not only asking the right questions, but also finding and committing to answers that work.”
Additional celebrity players including musicians, professional sports players and more will be announced in the coming weeks. Watch www.commonwealthcares.org and its social media networks for announcements.
Cost for the Needtobreathe Classic is $300 for individual player registration and $1,200 for a team of four. To register or for sponsor opportunities, call 843-884-4545. Needtobreathe and other musicians will perform at an after-party concert for sponsors and players (separate VIP ticket available for purchase with golf registration). A limited number of celebrity foursomes are available at $5,000 each; they include a foursome paired with one celebrity and eight VIP passes to the after-party concert.
Needtobreathe is an American rock ‘n’ roll band from South Carolina, effortlessly woven from the musical traditions and faith of their upbringing in the Deep South of the United States. Made up of brothers Bear Rinehart (vocals, guitar) and Bo Rinehart (guitar, vocals), as well as Seth Bolt (bass, vocals), the band hit its big break in 2005 when it signed to Atlantic/Lava/Word Records. The career to follow would include four full studio albums, chart-topping cross-genre success, multiple headlining tours and media coverage on CONAN, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Late Show with David Letterman, MTV, FOX and more. The band’s fifth studio album, “Rivers In the Wasteland,” will be available April 15, 2014.
Founded in 2007, Commonwealth Cares Foundation is the charitable arm of Commonwealth Financial Group, a Daniel Island-based financial services firm with a division focused on providing financial planning services to physicians and the medical community.
Foundation founder Britt Gilbert, whose firm takes a values-based approach to its work, believes that “success is measured by the lives we change, the impact we have on others and our involvement as responsible community members.” Gilbert has gone on two medical missions trips with PMI, one to Uganda and one to Nicaragua in December 2012.
“What continues to draw me closer to PMI is the sustainability model,” Gilbert said. “We can look back over a long period of time and see that we’ve served this many people, who are now serving themselves. We’re providing sustainable care at a level where they take ownership of it. For anybody who wants to make an investment, they want to see that the other person has taken ownership of it, and I think PMI has done a really good job of that.”
